Mahogany for joinery in Nairobi

Most ready-made joinery in Nairobi is mahogany, and that is not a compromise. It is stable enough for doors, dense enough for stair components, easier to work than mvule, takes a good finish, and costs materially less.

What it is good at

Doors and frames. The bulk of the market, and rightly. A solid mahogany internal door is heavy enough to feel substantial, holds a lock properly, and can be planed and re-hung as a house moves.

Stair components. Steps, risers, strings, handrails and balusters are all commonly mahogany. It machines cleanly, which matters on a moulded handrail, and it is dense enough for treads in normal domestic use.

Furniture and built-ins. It looks like a hardwood should, it is dimensionally forgiving, and it can be repaired indefinitely.

What it is less good at

Persistent wet. It is durable, not naturally durable in the way mvule’s heartwood is. For an external door in full weather, or ground-adjacent outdoor work, mvule is the better answer.

Very heavy abrasion. On a staircase in a busy household with dogs and children, mvule treads dent less.

Staining it is where jobs go wrong

Mahogany’s pore structure absorbs stain unevenly. Applied straight, a stain lands dark in the open grain and light elsewhere, and around figure it blotches. The room then looks patchy in a way nobody can quite name.

The fix is unglamorous and reliable: a conditioner or sealer coat first, then the stain, and a test piece cut from the same length rather than from a sample board. We do that as a matter of course, and it is worth asking any joiner whether they will.

Matching a repair

Mahogany darkens with age, so new timber spliced into an old component starts lighter and closes most of the gap over a season. On a genuinely old piece, in a Muthaiga or Karen house, a perfect immediate match is sometimes not achievable, and we will say so rather than promise an invisible repair. Mahogany or mvule?

Mahogany for internal doors, frames, stair components and furniture, where it is easier to work, cheaper and entirely durable enough. Mvule where the timber is external, walked on, or in persistent damp. Most houses want both, used where each belongs.

Is the mahogany sold in Nairobi real mahogany?

Timber sold as mahogany in East Africa is usually an African species rather than the Central American mahogany of antique furniture. It is a legitimate trade name for a group of related timbers with similar working properties, not a substitution. What matters for a joinery job is the density and the grain, which you can see.

Why does mahogany blotch when stained?
